BMW Motorrad was the first mainstream motorcycle manufacturer to equip production motorcycles with Anti-Lock Brakes(ABS) and the first manufacturer to make ABS standard on their motorcycles in 2012. ABS is one of the most effective safety features available in the motorcycle industry and routine flushes of the fluid in your brake system are essential to maintain the proper operation of your ABS. Our technicians have the equipment and specialized computers to properly purge contaminated fluid from your brake lines, calipers and ABS modulator. This kind of regular system maintenance removes contaminants and deposits and helps avoid dangerous ABS failures. As a general rule, BMW Motorrad recommends that brake fluid be changed every two years.

Brakes are one of those items that we, as motorcyclists, rely upon heavily to keep us safe during each and every ride. Make sure that your brakes continue to offer their optimal performance by maintaining a proper brake pad thickness at all times. If your pads are too thin stopping distance may increase which is a major safety concern. We always recommend and install BMW Motorrad brake parts which offer superior stopping performance compared to some of the less expensive ‘off-brand’ alternatives. Every time our technicians replace brake pads they also measure brake rotor thicknesses to make verify that they are still within factory specifications. If you’re replacing rotors it’s always a good idea to purchase new pads so that the surface of the new rotors can be correctly bedded in with a fresh set of pads.

After you’ve spent a few hundred miles getting acquainted with your new BMW Motorcycle (we recommend 600 miles), it’s very important to have a break-in service performed to confirm that your motorcycle is operating correctly and to replace the engine oil and filter. As the Bay Area’s only BMW Motorcycle dealership, our technicians have more exposure to BMW Motorcycles than anyone which means your motorcycle will always have the attention of a true BMW Motorcycle specialist. The break-in service is also an excellent opportunity for us to address any questions or concerns that may have arisen for you while getting acquainted with your new BMW Motorcycle. A motorcycle’s chain and sprockets are constantly exposed to extreme conditions out there on the road and in the dirt. When you add in the corrosive potential of San Francisco’s ocean air and proper maintenance becomes critical to maximizing the life of your chain and sprockets. BUT even with the strictest of maintenance regimens, due to wear and tear, all chains and sprockets need to be replaced eventually. It’s always a good idea to replace your chains and sprockets at the same time and once you do you’ll notice an immediate improvement in the way your BMW Motorcycle runs, shifts, and sounds. If you’re not sure if your chain and sprocket need to be replaced, here are a few quick things to look for:

• • Teeth of sprockets starting to look like ‘waves’. When new, the teeth of sprockets are essentially symetrical so if you start to notice curvature (like a side view of a wave on a beach) on one side of the teeth it’s time to replace your chain and sprockets
• • Chains stretch over their lifespan and, to a certain degree, the extra ‘play’ created by the chain stretching can be compensated for using the adjuster on your motorcycle’s swingarm. But eventually your adjuster will get maxed out at which point it is time to replace your chain and sprocket
• • To check the ‘play’ in your chain, pinch the chain at its’ midpoint below the swingarm and move the chain up and down while measuring the distance between the highest and lowest points. Cross reference this measurement with the recommended chain ‘slack’ or ‘play’ shown in your owner’s manual.

Final drive fluid changes are relatively quick and inexpensive but a lot of riders pass on this maintenance item during routine services. We recommend that BMW Motorcycles with shaft drives have the fluid changed in the final drive every couple of years to keep this critical component operating the way it should. An oil and filter change is an easy, affordable way to maintain your BMW Motorcycle and keep it on the road and running longer. BMW Motorrad recommends that engine oil changes be performed every 6,000 miles or once per year, whichever comes first, and we always recommend the use of BMW Motorrad oils and filters.

With all of the information flying around the world wide web these days, it can be hard to know whether or not your BMW Motorcycle qualifies for a recall or campaign. Our service department has the ability to look up your motorcycle in BMW of North America’s database and check for open recalls or campaigns. Include the last 7-digits of your motorcycle’s VIN (usually starts with a ‘Z’) in your e-mail to us and we’ll let you know if your motorcycle needs anything as soon as possible.

Generally speaking, a service includes fluid changes, lubrication, adjustments, electrical maintenance, a safety check, an overall performance check and everything your vehicle needs to run smoothly but our service advisors are more than happy to detail exactly what will be done on your specific model BMW Motorcycle given the mileage and age of your machine if you provide us with your information.

Few things are as important to a motorcycle’s safety and overall performance than tires. We highly recommend that you check your tire pressure and inspect your tires for damage regularly, ideally before each and every ride. A properly inflated tire that is still within its’ normal lifespan will help your motorcycle accelerate, brake and corner more consistently and safely which adds up to more fun riding. If you notice any of the following while inspecting your tires we recommend replacement:

• • DOT ‘born on date’ is more than five years old. This date can be found on the sidewall of your tires and is generally expressed as a week number and then the last two digits of the year of manufacture. For example, a tire constructed in the 5th week of 2010 will read ‘0510’
• • Minimum tread depth of 2mm… If you don’t have a tool to measure this, the distance between the edge of a penny and Lincoln’s head is pretty close to 2mm. So if you can see all of Lincoln’s hair, it’s time to replace your tires.
• • Tire is squared off meaning that the middle of your tires have worn down more than the sides of your tire changing the profile of the tire from a smooth curve to something resembling more of a square shape.
• • Cords… Please do not let your tires wear down to the point that cords are visible. We have seen these more times than we’d care to remember and is an immediate indication that tires have been worn WAY beyond their usable lifespan. If you can see some cords (usually are a lighter color and are a distinctly different texture from the rubber carcass of the tire) we recommend that you do not operate your motorcycle again until you have the tires replaced.

If your BMW Motorcycle is performing poorly, starts hard, backfires, or has a noisy valve train, it may be time for a valve adjustment. The valves are timed to the piston movement via the timing chain and other components. If your valves are out of adjustment, the motor’s intake stroke, power stroke, or exhaust stroke may stop working correctly. Our BMW certified technicians are very familiar with checking and adjusting the valves on all kinds of BMW Motorcycles so you know we’ll get your motorcycle running right the first time. Plus, we only charge for the work we do, which means if we check your valves and they don’t need adjusting, you save money!
